Characteristics related to biosafety
Osteogaster aenea is native to northern South America and Trinidad and Tobago. The species was originally described from Trinidad Island, its type locality. A specific evolutionary centre of origin within its native range has not been established.

EN
No specific centre of genetic diversity has been identified for Osteogaster aenea. Available information is insufficient to identify a particular geographical area within its native range as a centre of genetic diversity. Historical reports of extensive geographical variation should be interpreted with caution because the former concept of Corydoras aeneus encompassed a broader and taxonomically complex group of populations.
EN
Osteogaster aenea is a freshwater, benthic species inhabiting shallow streams, pools and other freshwater habitats. It occurs in stagnant, slow-moving and running waters and has been recorded from both clear and turbid environments. In Trinidad, it occurs in stream riffles with moderate flow as well as slower pools, with an apparent preference for running water. The species is a facultative air-breather, using intestinal respiration in addition to branchial respiration.
EN
Osteogaster aenea is native to northern South America and Trinidad and Tobago. Under the current taxonomic treatment, its native distribution includes Ecuador, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, with its occurrence in Colombia considered uncertain. The species has been reported as introduced in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, the Hawaiian Islands and the Philippines. Older literature attributed a substantially broader South American distribution to Corydoras aeneus, but these records should be interpreted cautiously in light of subsequent taxonomic revisions.

Additional Information
Taxonomic note: This species was formerly widely recognized as Corydoras aeneus (Gill, 1858). Following the phylogenomic revision of Corydoradinae by Dias et al. (2024), the genus Osteogaster was revalidated and the species was transferred to this genus. The currently accepted name is Osteogaster aenea (Gill, 1858),  as recognized by Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes; the revised nomenclature has also been adopted by NCBI Taxonomy and FishBase.
It has been the subject of numerous aquarium-breeding protocols because of its relatively easy reproduction in captivity.
